Seminar 10 and 11

Analysis of the mistakes in Midterm test 1

Text “Meat as food” (discussion of the text and lexical exercises)

Seminar 11 starts with doing some grammar exercises on the „Reported Speech“ (First certificate Unit 6 Exercise 8-10 pages 30-31; the exercises and the key can be found on ÕIS)

The seminar continues by the students working in pairs or in groups of three and doing each other’s crosswords.

The seminar continues by a discussion of the types of lexical exercises that should be included into the Worksheet (Assignment 16 – 1 day before presentation)

Types of assignments in the Worksheet:

4 questions – the questions should be based on the presentation and be arranged in the order the information is presented. The questions should be on the key issues of the presentation and it should be possible to summarise the presentation by using the answers to those four questions

3 synonyms and 3 antonyms - the words should be related to the field of study.

5 sentences where gaps are to be filled – the gaps may relate to minor details of the presentation, which the presenter still considers important. Numbers, geographical names, names of the species or breeds are examples of good information for a gap-filling exercise.

Text “Chemistry of Meat” (discussion and lexical exercises)

Homework:

Assignment 9: 5 collocations from the report (11.04.2012)

Presenters prepare their presentations and worksheets (Assignment 16 – 1 day before presentation).

Assignment 15: 5 collocations from the presentation different from those presented for the report. - 1 day before the date of the presentation

Seminar 8

Finnish the exercises on the text “Primary Production of Milk” (Answers are in ÕIS)

Work with the crosswords of at least 15 collocations using the words from the articles, the first summary and topic “Nutrition” (all the lists can be found on ÕIS) and bring it to class. (Assignment 14 – 21.03.2012)

Homework:

Get prepared for the test:

Review the words from the first summary, from the articles (group work), from lexical exercises on the topic „Nutrition“ and the text „Primary production of Milk“

Review the grammar topics:

English tenses

Reported Speech and Passive Voice (Assignment 13 – the assignment should be sent to the teacher for corrections a couple of days before the test)

Seminar 6

The seminar starts with the discussion of the article “How to cite sources in an academic paper?”

The seminar continues with students doing the exercises on the topic “Nutrition” and meanwhile, the lecturer correct the student’s report outlines (Assignment 7 – 07.03.2012).

The assignments are checked.

Afterwards, the students start reading the text “Primary milk production” and doing the exercises.

Homework:

Send the report outlines to the lecturer’s e-mail (Assignment 7 – 09.03.2012)

Prepare to write the report: choose the quotations, make the list of references, etc.

Finnish the exercises on the text “Primary Production of Milk”

Study the Reported Speech and Passive Voice, practice with the internet exercises the links to which can be found on ÕIS. Do grammar exercises (Assignment 13 – 14.03.2012)

Compile the crossword of at least 15 collocations using the words from the articles, the first summary and topic “Nutrition” (all the lists can be found on ÕIS) and bring it to class. (Assignment 14 – 21.03.2012)

Seminar 5

The students start with presenting their articles. The presentation is followed by the discussion: the students ask the questions they have prepared.

The seminar continues with doing the crossword puzzle.

Pair work: students work in pairs and read the sentences they have prepared to each other in Estonian and the partner translates the sentences into English. Then students swap roles.

Assignment 10: Corrections of the mistakes in the gist (29.02.2012)

Homework:

Collocations from the articles: do the matching exercise.

Read the article: How to cite sources in an academic paper and prepare to discuss it with the lecturer at the next seminar.

Write the report outline, find and write quotations, compile the lists of references (Assignment 7: report outline – 05.03.2012)

Seminar 4

Work in groups and discuss the collocations of the article, choose 10 best collocations and present them to the lecturer as a Microsoft Word document (Assignment 7 – 22.02.2012).

Continue working in groups and make a slide show of the article containing 15 slides. Present the slideshow to the lecturer as a Microsoft PowerPoint file (Assignment 6 – 22.02.2012).

Discuss 4 questions that can be asked arter your presentation, write them down and present to the lecturer together with the answers you expect to get from the audience (Assignment 11 – 22.02.2012).

Prepare to present your slideshows to the group

Continue reading the articles and write the outline

Study the list of words from the first summary and make five sentences with the collocations that were not used in the crossword. (Assignment 12 - 29.02.2012)
